Pen Boxes

he oldest pen boxes have come to us from Islamic culture. The British Museum keeps a brassy pen box which was manufactured in the actual Iraq in the period 1230 - 1250. It has a long section for pens, with smaller containers at one end for ink, sand (for blotting the ink) and threads (for cleaning the reed-pens). Click for the details here.

In the previous century the pen boxes began to be used almost everywhere, particularly in schools. In times when the school desks used to have the inkwells, the pen boxes contained a penholder, a pen and a rubber. The desks with inkwells don't exist any more, hardly any would know what a penholder is, and the pen boxes are mostly of PVC-materials. From the old pen boxes only the name remained.

Wooden Chalk Holder

This chalk holder will accept standard 10mm school chalk (ONLY for Ø=10mm) which was used before the introduction of the whiteboards. Chalk is still being used in many schools, whilst the holder is mostly a gift - a memento of a past time.
